Previously Unimaginable: Leadership Lessons from The Detroit Lions
There are many sources of inspiration on authentic leadership, teamwork and trust. But it’s been a long while since we looked to the Detroit Lions for these insights. After winning their first playoff game in more than three decades, Coach Dan Campbell shared his thoughts.
“… To be able to do something that’s greater than yourself. It takes everyone around you doing their job at a high level. You gotta be able to trust them. Its special. Different than anything else. It’s why we do what we do. Not about the money. It’s about the competition, it’s about the comradery. To be the best of the best collectively…”
When I listened to this quote from Coach Dan Campbell late last night, I once again was reminded of the ability of sports to teach and inspire us as we lead teams, build intrinsic motivation, and compete in our businesses. Yes, during his post-game presser he addressed key plays, strategy, and the more technical aspects of the game. However, Campbell was intentional, passionate, and authentic about he leads and how he feels.
Hang on to that for a second. Intentional, passionate, authentic leadership.
If the Lions can adopt this culture and mindset to achieve great things, maybe we can take a page from their playbook as we begin our 2024 journey
